Dogs

Statistics show that one of the most common things for a person to have is a pet, and one of the most popular pets in the world is the dog. Dogs have been faithful companions to humans for thousands of years, and have also been helping people do their work for the same amount of time. The decision to get a dog as a pet, however, should never be made hastily. Before you rush off to the pet store or the animal shelter and fall in love with that cute little puppy, you need to make sure that you are ready for the responsibility. You need to be prepared with the right kind of food; you need to know about all the safety issues involved with having a dog, as well as the legal requirements for dog owners. You also need to ask yourself some pertinent questions, such as “will I or my family be able to spend a lot of quality time with a dog?” Will I have the resources to make sure that my dog is healthy, including getting him all the necessary immunization shots and taking him to the vet when he’s not well?” Some people will get a dog as a pet on whim, and then figure out later on that they simply don’t have the time or the money to care for their new pet properly.

If you believe that you are prepared to have a dog as a pet and that you can follow all the safety guidelines and legal requirements as well as dedicate quality time to your new family member, then your next step is to choose your dog. You want to be sure that you choose a dog that will fit well with your lifestyle. It doesn’t make much sense for someone who lives in a small apartment to buy a Saint Bernard, or for a farmer who needs a working dog to buy a Chihuahua. If you have young children you want a breed of dog for a pet that is, for safety reasons, known for its calm and even temperament. It all comes down to plain common sense and careful planning before you decide on what type of pet dog you should have.

If you don’t exactly have your heart set on a purebred dog, then it is a great idea to go to your local animal shelter. There are so many dogs that need homes, and if you can provide love and care for one homeless dog you are doing a great service. Actually, you can even find a purebred pet dog in an animal shelter, although the majority of the dogs will be mixed breeds. If you go to an animal shelter to choose your dog, be sure to watch how the dog acts with you, and even with the other dogs. This can tell you a lot about how well your dog will fit in with your family or your lifestyle. For safety and other reasons, animal shelters will post as much as they know about each dog, such as where it came from, what kind of temperament that it has, and how old it is.

If you are looking for a purebred dog, be sure to buy one from a reputable breeder. Although pet stores will sell purebred dogs, there is often a question about where these dogs actually came from. Disreputable “puppy mills” abound, and the unfortunate dogs that are born in these institutions will often develop a host of health problems due to indiscriminate breeding. You should always keep in mind that a reputable breeder will rarely if ever sell puppies to a pet store. There are legal requirements to owning a dog, and you need to follow them. All dogs are required to get rabies vaccinations every year for the safety of everyone, and they also need to be licensed. If you are not ready for this expense, you are not ready for a dog. You also need to make sure that you buy the best food possible for your dog – this is important if you want your pet to live a long and healthy life.
